As a travel agent committed to thoroughly understanding the all-inclusive experiences available in Mexico and the Caribbean, I recently spent 5 nights at the RIU Santa Fe in Cabo San Lucas. The resort certainly has its highlights. Its charming adobe-style design and wide array of amenities create an inviting first impression. Guests can enjoy 10 swimming pools, many with swim-up bars, and 10 bars, including some paired with stunning infinity pools. For families and thrill-seekers, the two water parks—one for kids and one for adults—are a great addition. The resort also hosts lively themed parties throughout the week, such as neon and pink parties, offering a vibrant atmosphere in designated areas while keeping quieter spaces for those seeking tranquility.
Cleanliness is another strong point of the RIU Santa Fe. The staff works tirelessly to maintain the property, and their efforts do not go unnoticed. This dedication to upkeep, combined with the resort's affordability, attracts a diverse mix of guests, including families, couples, solo travelers, and seniors. For those looking for a budget-friendly getaway with plenty of activities, it’s easy to see the appeal.
However, there are notable downsides. The biggest disappointment was the dining experience. While the resort offers six restaurants and multiple buffets, much of the food felt repetitive, with buffet items often reappearing in the à la carte restaurants. As a pescatarian traveling with a meat eater, I found the vegetarian options uninspired and often bland. Simple dishes, like vegetarian enchiladas, were surprisingly unappetizing, and even simple nacho cheese was watered down and flavorless. While meat eaters may fare better, the lack of thoughtful vegetarian options left a poor impression and has made me hesitant to recommend RIU properties without further research into their dining quality.
The beach is another drawback. The sand is coarse and pebbly, with a steep slope that makes it uncomfortable for walking or lounging. Additionally, the ocean in this area is dangerous and not suitable for swimming. Guests hoping to enjoy long walks on a powdery beach or spend hours playing in the surf will be disappointed. This is not the resort for a beach-focused vacation.
Another issue was the firmness of the beds. They were so firm that I woke up multiple times each night, making restful sleep difficult. This is worth noting for anyone who values a comfortable sleeping environment. However, I did ask the staff to bring several extra blankets and they were happy to do so.
Finally, while the resort offers a variety of drink options, beer lovers may be disappointed by the lack of variety—Dos Equis is the only beer available throughout the property.
In summary, the RIU Santa Fe has many appealing features, including affordability, cleanliness, and a lively atmosphere with plenty of activities. However, the lackluster dining experience, uncomfortable beds, and limited beach usability make it a mixed bag. I would recommend this resort only to budget-conscious travelers who prioritize pools, parties, and a bustling environment over gourmet dining or relaxing beach days.
